The Wild Swans
Once upon a time, in a kingdom far away, there lived a king who had eleven sons and one daughter named Eliza. The children were the king’s greatest joy, and he loved them dearly. His daughter, Eliza, was known throughout the land for her beauty, kindness, and wisdom. She was adored by her brothers, and they spent their days playing in the royal gardens and forests, always looking out for one another.
However, the queen, their mother, was a cruel and jealous woman. She hated the king’s children, especially Eliza, who she believed was too perfect. The queen could not bear the sight of Eliza’s beauty and sweetness, and she was consumed by envy. One day, she decided to rid herself of the princess and her brothers forever. So, the queen cast a terrible spell on them.
In the blink of an eye, the eleven brothers were transformed into wild swans, their wings spread wide as they soared into the sky. Eliza was devastated as she watched her beloved brothers take flight, flying higher and higher until they disappeared from sight. The queen’s spell had torn the family apart, and Eliza was left alone, heartbroken.
But the queen had one more cruel punishment in mind. She ordered Eliza to be taken far away to a small cottage in the woods, where she would live in isolation. There, the princess would be forced to endure a life of hardship and loneliness. Eliza's life was no longer filled with the joy of her family’s love, but with grief and sorrow.
For years, Eliza lived in the cottage by herself, always wondering about her brothers and praying that one day they might return to her. She kept her thoughts and memories of them close, never giving up hope. But as time passed, she grew older, and the years weighed heavily on her heart.
One day, while walking through the forest, Eliza met an old woman who seemed to know all about her pain. The woman told her that there was a way to break the curse and turn her brothers back into human form. However, the task would not be easy.
To free her brothers, Eliza would need to gather nettles, which grew only in the deepest parts of the forest. She had to pick them carefully and without any of the plants touching her skin. Then, she would need to weave the nettles into eleven shirts, each one for one of her brothers. The catch, however, was that Eliza would have to remain completely silent during the entire process. If she spoke a single word, her brothers would remain swans forever.
Determined to reunite with her brothers, Eliza set off on her journey. She ventured deep into the forest, where the nettles grew thick and wild. The task was difficult, as the sharp plants stung her hands, but Eliza endured the pain and worked tirelessly. Her love for her brothers gave her strength, and she continued to weave the shirts in silence.
As the days passed, Eliza worked day and night, carefully weaving the shirts without saying a word. Her fingers were raw and bleeding, but she did not stop. She would not give up on her brothers, no matter the cost.
Finally, after many long and painful weeks, Eliza had woven the last shirt. She had finished the eleventh shirt, and now, all she had to do was wait for the right moment. Her brothers would come to her, and she would cast the shirts upon them to break the curse.
One evening, as the sun began to set, Eliza heard the familiar sound of wings beating in the distance. It was her brothers, the wild swans, returning to their home. They circled overhead, calling to her with joy and longing. Eliza’s heart filled with hope and love as she watched them descend toward her.
As the swans landed near her, Eliza rushed forward, holding the shirts tightly in her hands. She threw the shirts over their heads, and in an instant, the curse was broken. The swans transformed back into her brothers, who stood before her, tall and strong once again. They were overjoyed to be human once more, and they embraced their sister with all the love they had longed to share.
But Eliza’s joy was short-lived. Just as she was about to speak, the queen appeared in the distance, furious that Eliza had broken the spell. The wicked queen, seeing her daughter and sons together again, grew enraged. She cast another spell to curse Eliza forever.
In a flash, Eliza was struck dumb, unable to speak or make a sound. Her voice was stolen from her, and she was silenced forever. But her brothers, who had just been restored to their human forms, knew that they must protect their sister at all costs. They vowed to help her, no matter the price.
The brothers told Eliza that they must leave the kingdom and seek refuge in a distant land. They took her to a faraway castle, where they were given shelter. There, Eliza and her brothers began to live in peace, but the curse of silence remained.
Years passed, and though Eliza remained mute, she was content knowing that her brothers were free from their wild forms. They would often tell her stories of their adventures and of the day they were transformed into swans. But Eliza never forgot the pain of her silence and the hardship it had caused.
One day, Eliza found herself in the court of the king of a neighboring kingdom. The king was known for his kindness and wisdom, and he had heard of Eliza’s bravery in breaking the curse on her brothers. He was so moved by her courage and compassion that he decided to help her.
He declared that Eliza’s voice would be restored, but only if she could prove her love for her brothers once more. She must go on a journey to find the magic flower that would break the curse of silence. Eliza, though still unable to speak, agreed to the king’s challenge.
With the help of her brothers, Eliza set out once more, this time to find the flower that would restore her voice. She faced many trials and dangers along the way, but her determination never wavered. Finally, after much hardship, Eliza found the magical flower and returned to the king.
With the flower in hand, Eliza’s voice was returned to her. She spoke for the first time in years, and her brothers embraced her in joy. Together, they returned to their kingdom, where they lived happily ever after, free from curses and cruelty.
